Why I love to bhome and at home in the fall
I am so excited to be a part of the Why I love to bHome and at home in the fall tour. I wanted to share with you what I love most about being at home in the fall in those few precious months we get in the Midwest between the heat of summer and the frigidness of winter.
The thing I really love most about fall is the way the scenery changes. I am a warm weather outdoors girl. By that I mean, if the temperature is 60 degrees and 100 degrees I am outside. Otherwise, I like to admire it from inside under my heated blanket and cup of hot cocoa and a good book.
According to my mom, my grandfather went to California in the 1930’s and came back because there were no seasonal changes, and there wasn’t a really good hunting season there. I don’t know why he picked to come all the way back to freaking cold and blustery Illinois, instead of stopping off somewhere like Kentucky or Tennessee, where you still get a change of seasons but not so cold. However, considering it was after he came back its when he met my grandmother, and here I am today,I guess I should be grateful for that!
When the temperature does start to take a cooler dip, and the leaves begin to change, and all of the mums start blooming (see how to grow your own big, beautiful mums here.), I start fall nesting and decorating in my home, cooking and baking yummy treats, and hiking our local arboretum (the fall colors are just amazing, and so are their fall displays!).
I just love seeing the changing color in general. Last year we went to Galena,IL and it was amazing! The colors were gorgeous!
And, I LOVE that there are so many fall home tours to look at in blogland. You can see my fall home tour from earlier this month here.
and from last year here.
I love sitting with my cup of coffee with flavored creamer, and clicking through all of the creative ways people get their home ready for fall. It inspires me to see other people so inspired and creative.
I also have the urge to start baking and cooking. One of my favorite things to bake is my Mother in law’s apple crumble recipe, which I’ll share later this week.
She’s from England and man, can she bake a mean apple crumble.
I also love cooking pumpkin and squash. I know it’s not for everyone, in fact I have two that love it, and a third that just chokes down her one no thank you bite. Every. Single.Time. I guess I should be impressed at least we’ve gotten to the point where she no longer makes retching noises.
I love this recipe for yummy sour cream roasted pumpkin soup,
and this awesome butternut squash pasta sauce.
There are so many good things about why I love to be at home in the fall. I really love that things slow down, I can concentrate on my art work and filling my shop with new designs. Even though it gets a bit crazy in blogland, I still love the anticipation leading up to the holiday season including all of the book signings and speaking engagements for my book, Creatively Christmas: Inspired Yuletide Décor.
It makes the season fun!

Jennifer, I do love living where the seasons change. I am not a huge fan of the heat nor the cold so fall is just right before the real cold sinks in. Your recipes look wonderful.
Thank you Kim. I agree. I wish I could get the seasons without it going below 50!
So loved seeing your favorite things of Fall and your beautiful decor….the image of the gorgeous Fall landscape in Galena is spectacular….Looking forward to your mother-in-law’s apple crumble….looks amazing! Happy Fall Jennifer!
Thank you Shirley! I hope you have a happy fall too!
Jennifer, thank you for the fall gorgeousness! I live in California, and although we actually DO get a small seasonal change {the big gingko tree in our back garden colors and drops all its thousands of leaves!} I do miss living somewhere where there are true seasons.
I always love visiting you, especially when you are sharing your cozy home. You have a knack for creating beautiful rooms that are so welcoming and warm. Happy Fall!
You are so sweet Lidy! Thank you! . I did notice when I was just there how the leaves were changing. He must have been a die hard cold weather person.. crazy I know!
Hi Jen! Its so funny how you mention your Grandpa and California. My Grandpa brought his family out to CA from MI so I’ve only lived in southern California all my life, so haven’t experienced any dramatic season changes. However, my husband and I are taking a vacation to TN shortly to experience what a season is and we might even look around at housing! Have a blessed day!
That’s funny!1 There is something about the season’s that just love, and how colorful everything is.. if you can tolerate the cold!
Great post the pasta sauce sounds yummy.
Thanks Pamela. It is really yummy.
Thanks for giving us a peek inside your favorite things for fall. 🙂

You too Julie! Your home looked beautiful!
I love the fall too – your grandpa didn’t visit the right spots in California. It isn’t ablaze in foliage, but we do get changes for sure. But glad he went back & met your grandma so we could be on tour together again today! All worked out just fine. I am definitely trying out your pumpkin soup & pasta sauce recipes – yum!
Thanks Kelly!!!

Jen,
I live in the northeast and love the change of seasons too – well, at least 3 out of the four. Frankly, I could do without winter! There’s something so homey and cozy about fall that makes you want to nest, so yes to baking and yummy soup! Fun touring with you!

I enjoyed reading your thoughts about fall Jen. It might get cold there, but at least you get to see the beauty of Autumn. Where I live we don’t have seasonal changes, so I miss out on the pretty changes of colour and the falling leaves. At least I get to see it in blogand. Will come back for the crumble recipe later in the week.
