To ad or not to ad.. that is the question….

Some of you may notice that I’ve had a few more ads than normal floating around here.I know a lot of bloggers are proudly ad free and it can be a touchy subject.

We have recently found ourselves in the midst of taking a bit of a financial blow this summer.

Without going into too many details or trying to sound like I am planning a pity party; I have decided that  I need to make my blog work for me a little bit more to give us a little financial lift.

It won’t affect content or posting at all, but I might be doing a few more reviews here and there, and have more slots open on my sidebar for sponsors. In fact, I’d like to post more projects like I used to in the days before I worked a regular job as well. I love that part of blogging.

I know the Lord provides for us and this is an opportunity He has given me with my shop and also with my blog. The nice thing about Blogher is that it’s mostly traffic driven, not necessarily click-on driven revenue.

Someday maybe I will make ONE MILLION DOLLARS!!!MUWHAHAHAHAHA! but until then I’ll take it where I can get it a bit at a time; all of those pennies ad up! 🙂

I originally started with Blogherads on my sidebar to help off-set the cost of projects. It brings a nice steady bit of pocket money and I would recommend it to any one looking for a few extra bucks. I pick my ad subjects they run, and when they do post reviews there are many I choose not to participate in due to content, same for book club reviews. I think when I hit about 500 hits a day I was making about $30 a month. Not bad for  doing what I love to do, It has steady increased bit by bit since then. I also make a little bit from independent sidebar advertising as well. I would love to run an ad-free blog, but it’s just not an option for us right now.
I know with the economy the way it is, if you are finding out that you need a bit of  a financial boost and are okay with advertising there are many great places to start such as: Blogherads, Social Spark, Rivit, Clever girls network,  plus private advertising as well. I know it’s  a tough time for many people. We have many neighbors and friends who are struggling to keep their jobs and homes. I feel very, very blessed that I have the opportunity to work, and work it I shall!  I have just started selling my things at a new venue I am excited to tell you more about later. In fact, I am so driven, I would shake that money maker if the kids hadn’t already ruined it…. :)…  just kidding.
So hang in there with me. If you have any question about advertising on your own blog, feel free to ask away!

Jen

  1. You don’t know me, but I say you should always do what you feel led to do. If this works for you and your family, and you feel like God has opened this door, then walk through it. Never apologize (you didn’t..I’m just saying) for something you feel like is best for your family. I think it’s a great opportunity.

Love the money maker comment, by the way…

  2. Hi, this is a weird place to add this comment because it isn’t related to your current post, but I JUST found your blog through Jeanne Oliver’s Creatively Made class. It started yesterday and I viewed your video and wanted to check out your blog and Etsy shop. Thanks for being a part of the class and being so brave and honest about your own journey. It helped me and I thank you. I plan to come back and look around more, and of course subscribe so I can follow you from here on, but I wanted to leave a comment to let you know that you are still impacting people with your kindness and willingness to share.

I truly hope the ads help to bring in some extra $$$ because frankly who couldn’t use that right now? Best of luck in all you do and I hope to hear from you sometime.

  3. Good for you Jen! For some of us, blogging is like publishing our own mini-magazine…and it takes time and effort and skill and creativity!!! So if you are forunate enough to be able to make some income from your blog, I say go for it!Have a lovely week! Angie xo

  4. Good for you!! I think that bloggers should be compensated for their work, and you of all people deserve it!! You are creative, talented and generous, and if the ads mean you can keep doing what you’re doing, then bring on the ads!! Tell me where to click, sister, and I’m’a clickin!! 🙂

  5. Jen, I am so glad that God has opened this door for you and hopefully it will help ease some of the financial hit you have had. You should be compensated for all the time you put into doing this blog. I hope you know that I love you and your blog with or without ads!

  6. I don’t mind the adds at all Jen! You have a beautiful blog and I enjoy reading it. I am wishing you all the best.

  7. Jen,
I don’t mind the ads.I took them off of my blog because I am fairly new and even though I was getting hits it was not enough hits for them to give me a check. So until I get more traffic I am not giving it away for free :-).
Maybe after year I will go back to it.Extra money always helps.

  8. I don’t mind the ads either. I say to each his own. And good for you for taking matters into your hands. I am a single mom with a full time job but also work pretty hard at my Etsy shop because that income really matters to me and my girls. So, I am sure that things will improve simply because of your attitude and the fact that you are taking action.

    What a sweet baby!

  10. Jen, I think the ads are totally fine! You have so much great content that it all evens out. And I love your post- a very positive feel for a subject that could be a real sob-fest. I wish you all the best of luck in all of these endeavors!

  11. Ads shmads! Let them roll and hopefully they help you more as time goes along. Love your blog and your creative items you have for sale. Onward and upward – blessings to you. Patty/BC

  12. Jenn- I actually like the ads- I can choose to check them out or not- I get lots of good info-
Love the images you chose for this post!
Question for you- what would you suggest as a first step for adding ads to my blog? I have a wordpress- it’s not fancy.

  13. You should be compensated for the work you do–and it is work! I’ll try to find time to visit more if that will up your hits totals. I also visit Affordable Antiques and More when I’m in Naperville–love them! Keep it up and good luck to you.
