Salt Dough Ornaments

We needed an indoor day activity to do since our mounds of beautiful snow also included negative 10 degree weather and bored kids.
I found a salt dough recipe and added 2 TBSP. of pumpkin pie spice to give it that holiday smell, feel and color. You can also add ginger and cinnamon for a gingerbread scent!
A salt dough gingerbread man-shaped ornament hangs from a string on a tree branch, with some pine needles visible nearby.
I also used whole wheat flour so it started off a tad browner.
A person shapes salt dough into a ball with their hands over a floured surface.
We decided to make them look like  fake cookies. I did put holes in the top with a sharpened pencil incase we decided to hang them up.
A roughly shaped, homemade salt dough cookie with two round eyes and a nose sits on parchment paper, with other cookie shapes in the background.
Since many of our “cookies” came out like this, I decided to help out and do a few more traditional gingerbread man shaped ones myself.
A person uses a paintbrush to apply white paint to a salt dough gingerbread-shaped ornament on a newspaper-covered surface.
After air drying; we brushed them with white school glue and used craft glitter and those colored glitter glue pens for “icing”.
A snowflake-shaped salt dough cookie covered in white glitter sits on newspaper, with a bottle of craft glitter nearby and some glitter scattered on the paper.
and the glittering began…I didn’t know what I was in for.
A hand holds a sugar-coated salt dough gingerbread ornament figure being decorated with blue and red sprinkles over a newspaper on a table.
By the time we were done, we had glitter pens, glitter table, glitter girls, glitter mom and of course a glitter floor.

 but we had a blast.
String of white salt dough gingerbread man ornaments hangs with pine garland and icicle decorations above a window at dusk.
I strung mine on twine with the crystals  and greenery over my sink.

Three salt dough ornaments, shaped like a gingerbread person, a star, and an abstract form, rest on a white ceramic plate beside a decorative object.
The extra salt dough ornaments we put in the hutch on a cute platter.
A white dish holds several roughly decorated, shaped salt dough cookies, while more salt dough cookies are displayed on a white cake stand beside it.
They actually still have  a faint gingerbread scent which is nice.

I don’t know if they will keep until next year, but  we might make  a few to use as gift tags on packages with a clay stamping kit.. I know the kids really enjoyed making them and it was a great snowy day activity/art project. We might skip the glitter next time and just paint them!

  1. What a fun way to spend some time with little ones! I love the way you strung them together as a garland. They are so simple and rustic, but so cute!

  2. I love the idea! I too just got my Romantic Country issue! Love your images of the Na da farm event! Your photography is stunning and I enjoy your angles! I was honored to be in the same issue as you. Have a wonderful day!Lulu

  3. You know the part in Sleepless in Seattle when she says ” I just need more twinkle lights”- well, I think the updated version would be a blogger/artists saying- “I just need more glitter.” I am all about glitter lately. And, I love the glittermen over the sink.
Fabulous- more fabulous than ANYTHING you could have purchased. GO GLITTER! And Merry Christmas!

  4. Those are so cute. I’ve done the apple sauce, cinnamon and elmer’s glue ones before but never this recipe. I know the ones I did before last and last and last. I still have them from like 20 years ago.
