Cottagecore Home Tour

Welcome Poppies at Play Parade of home visitors,  and my regular readers! Thanks for joining me just a few miles outside of the city of Chicago in the ‘burbs. First, please  join me in our remodeled cottage kitchen.
A kitchen with cream-colored cabinets, a central island with green apples, stainless steel appliances, a chandelier, and a curtain covering a pantry area.

A Cottage Kitchen with White Cabinets

We painted our kitchen cabinets and really wanted to bring in the cottage style, We added elements like a vintage  gold chandelier and accents such as silver platters. Many times accessories really make a plain kitchen. On the other side of the kitchen we removed the cabinets to add a free standing kitchen hutch. Not only does it make a great storage piece, but a free standing piece of furniture is much more bespoke than big box store cabinets.
A kitchen with white cabinets, a chandelier, a small island with green apples, a vintage hutch, and a curtain covering a doorway.
Inside of the hutch we’ve placed all of our daily dishes. Not only is it pretty, but serves a purpose. It also is easier for the kiddos to put the dishes away.
A vintage cabinet with glass doors displays stacked plates, cups, glasses, bowls, cake stands, and floral teacups on three shelves—a charming highlight from A Summer Tour of a Cottage home.
The top of our refrigerator is styled with a vintage bottle rack and vintage blue mason jars. It’s handy storage and looks pretty too.
A metal mug rack holds several white mugs on top of a cabinet, next to a large wall clock and two blue mason jars.
I think bringing in greenery  and plants is a great way to add life to a home. Even a pitcher full of mint adds a a nice bit of color against the bead board wallpaper.
A white ceramic pitcher filled with fresh green mint leaves sits on a wooden floor against a paneled wall.
Our butcherblock countertops also add warmth. Vintage touches with cake plates, plate stands and silver add vintage interest. A mirror also reflects light back into the room under the dark cabinets.
A wooden countertop displays three green apples on a white tray, silverware, a teapot on a glass stand, and decorative plates, with a small mirror in the background.
Over our  kitchen sink we have a vintage light with a glass globe. I love the personality it adds. And of course potted herbs and plants bring the outside in.
A white farmhouse kitchen sink under a window with potted plants on the sill, a Kitchen Pendant Light Makeover featuring a hanging glass fixture, and wooden utensils on the counter.
A glass pendant light hangs above a kitchen sink, with potted herbs on the windowsill and sunlight streaming through the window.
Using ordinary objects in a different way makes the special such as this vintage milk container with spoons for our coffee.
A white sugar bowl, a glass jar with spoons, and a small vase with a pink flower are arranged on a silver tray.

A Cozy Dining Nook

Our breakfast nook is the perfect place to spend the morning with a cup of coffee. I love how much light the large mirror reflects back into the room.
A cozy kitchen nook with a striped bench, floral arrangement, and table lamp sits beneath a large ornate mirror reflecting a chandelier and part of the adjacent room.
We really love our nook area and how cheerful it is.
A dining area with a white table, two wooden chairs, a bench, a lamp, a bowl of fruit, and a wall mirror reflecting part of the room and chandelier.
We have a small area in the back of our dining area that we’ve turn into a reading nook. It’s somewhere we can sit with company and have some coffee or I can hang out and read with the kids. I love all of the light in the space. I added the brown and white curtains with the beige walls  and love how they remind me of transferware.
A dining and sitting area with a wooden table, chairs, patterned curtains, armchairs, a lamp, wall art, and hardwood floors evokes a Moody Red Dining Room Makeover vibe, beautifully lit by natural light from large windows.

A Welcoming Entryway

Our entryway is welcoming with vintage botanical fern prints and a cute metal birdcage with boxwood wreaths. I love bringing the outside in, and we always need somewhere to sit to take our shoes on and off.
Small green bench with two cream cushions, framed fern artwork, and decorative wall hanging with greenery displayed above on a cream paneled wall.
We’ve added a large clock and cute blue table as a drop point for keys and other small goodies. THhe drawers are perfect for extra hats and gloves.
A large vintage-style wall clock hangs above a distressed blue dresser adorned with flowers, creating a warm welcome in the beige-walled entryway—just one stop on a summer tour of my home.

A Vintage Style Living Room

When you look at the main living room from the dining area, you can see the pre-1909 bus stop sign. It’s one of my favorite finds.

A cozy living room with beige armchairs, a cream sofa, a round wooden coffee table with a potted plant, and patterned curtains framing a large window.
And when you enter the main living room area, you can see all of the cottage touches like a fancy gold mirror, vintage sofa, rustic chest of drawers and distressed coffee table.  The vintage books behind the sofa on a skinny shelf add charm and dimension.
Beige living room with a vintage sofa, assorted cushions, mirror, wall clock, dresser with flowers, and a white coffee table with decorative items.
A fern in milk glass adds vintage charm with a touch of greenery.
A white ceramic vase with a fern plant sits on top of a stack of old books in front of a beige couch.
A beige couch with patterned pillows sits below an ornate gold mirror in a cozy living room, with tulips and potted plants on a white coffee table.
Vintage books add color, texture and interest! I love finding different wasy of decorating with vintage books. They add so much charm and character.
A row of vintage dictionaries and books stands on a shelf beneath a decorative mirror, with pink tulips in a vase visible on the right side.

A Cottage Primary Bedroom

Our primary bedroom has come a long way. I love the blue walls with the white bedding. It looks so serene.
A neatly made bed with white linens is centered between two nightstands with lamps, under a window with floral curtains in a softly lit bedroom.
The curtains are a vintage find that I cut down and sewed to fit out windows.
A neatly made bed with white bedding and floral pillow is between two nightstands with lamps, set against a wall with a window and floral curtains.
And on our nightstand we have some fun lamps to make it a little more modern cottage. We managed to find two nightstands that were simliar and paint them to look the same.
A white nightstand with a lamp, clock, and vase of green flowers sits next to a bed dressed in white linens and floral curtains—what's your style for creating a cozy bedroom retreat?.
I hope you loved this tour of our home! Thank you so much for joining me on a tour of our cozy, little house! And thank you Andrea for including my house on this wonderful tour of all of these beautiful homes! Please stop by the next stop at the fabulous.  Just a Girl!

  5. I want to say thank you! See I love you home and the fact that it is not huge!!! See we moved from Alaska to Indiana about a year ago. Yeah we are talking the big move from a 1850 square foot home that we heated with a woodstove on 10 acres where we grew some of our own food and picked berries which grew wild on our property to 1200 square feet on just under a 1/2 acre surrounded by an organic farm. (which was a blessing in itself as I HATE chemicals!!) But the house has been a challenge as we are a family of 5 who were feeling cramped… but now I have hope when I look at your lovely home. It is calm and serene and inviting! Thank you!!

  6. Oh my goodness! Your home is gorgeous!!!!

I absolutely love your kitchen, every square inch of it!

Love that green bench in your entry too!

    Hugs!

  7. Your home is beautiful! I like that you have some natural wood pieces of furniture, not everything is painted. I like painted furniture very much but a room full of it tends to be a bit much. I am your newest follower.

  8. Your home is Gorgeous with a capital G! I love the touches of silver everywhere! I have silver in my dining room, but you have inspired me to let it free in other areas of my home! That tray that is above your stove looks like it has feet, if so how did you hang it? I have one similar that I wanted to hang, but wasnt sure how to pull it off. Thanks for sharing your home, providing some great eye candy, and giving me tons of ideas!

Of course I love it. You have decorated with a lot of the same things that I have chosen for our home ~ white milk glass, blue, green, & loads of white colors. I just purchased that same fabric you have in your bedroom.
    My Best Wishes To You!

  16. Jennifer:

Your home is just delightful. I love all your great accents and attention to details.

My favorite room has to be that absolutely wonderful kitchen of yours. I love the island with the wood top. Everything has an elegant touch, but at the same time it is warm and welcoming.

So nice to visit your home,

  17. Jennifer,
I am in LOVE with your kitchen, well actually the whole house! I am so stealing/borrowing that silver platter over the stove idea. I love the juxtaposition of the shabby white & chippy paint with the shiny silver. Great job! Lisa

  19. Oh Jen. I don’t know where to begin girl!!!! Everything…I mean absolutely everything is so beautiful!!! 20. Every room is just beautiful. If you were my friend I’d be at your house every morning for coffee just to take it all in 😉

I was wondering what color butch block you went with for your countertops. IKEA has three choices I think and I am feeling like their colors on the web may not be true to shade in person. I think the warm tone of your is just right.

Also, did you do nothing other than oil them? I have heard people talking about waterlox….

    Thanks for your help! -Sarah

  21. Hi Jenn!
    So pretty!
I love your kitchen nook and love your cabinets that reach to the ceiling. So English! Your creamy dreamy whites mixed with the warm earthy wooden tones are gorgeous.
We will have to plan a house tour with each others’ homes one day!
Would love to see yours in person.
You are so clever and creative!

    Beautiful tour,
    thanks for sharing.
