Dark Navy Living Room Makeover with a Fire Place Built In
When I started talking to my clients at the Gather House, one thing that we talked about was making the space look fresh and new. These clients are also friends of ours and one of our favorite couples so it was such a joy to help them out. We were updating several rooms in their home, the main family/living room being one of them. My clients were ready for a big change and we went back-and-forth about a lot of wants and needs and how to make changes they would be comfortable with. We started off with talking about simple changes, such as doing the entire wall behind the fireplace in board and batten (because they wanted some kind of feature wall.). Then it morphed into talking about doing some kind of matching low bookcase or cabinet on each side of the fireplace because they had already had a free standing cabinet and liked the look of it. We stared with the idea of just doing some board and batten painted white on the back wall and ended up with a dark navy living room makeover with a fire place built in that is stunning.
I had done several mock ups for them and over time it slowly to talking about doing built-ins and then changing the fireplace. We were lucky that they have an amazing contractor they already work with on a regular basis, and they actually worked out how to do an amazing built-in all the way across. The contractor custom made the gorgeous wood mantle on top. One of the goals was to retain the original brick to the fireplace and it looks so amazing together.
I thought it would be so amazing to see the entire space transformed by a really dark saturated color. They had amazing windows, and so the room gets really great light all of the time, and can handle a really dark color easily. I knew with a contrasting with light drapery would be very striking. I was so happy they decided to take the risk. The homeowner said one of her favorite colors was blue so I knew we needed to go in that direction. Took the leap and painted the walls a beautiful Westcott Navy by Benjamin Moore.
Can you even believe this is the same room?! One of other conversation was about flooring because they already had stone flooring in their kitchen area and both rooms are connected, and they like the feel of carpet.
Love room makeovers? See how removing kitchen cabinets changed the look of this room!
We decided to just replace with a low pile, comfy and neutral carpet, and then go over the carpet with an area rug in the main sitting area to bring in some texture and color. I was so excited to see it come together, and I’m so happy they decided to take the risk and go with a really dark color. It looks also amazing together.
This whole room came together really organically. Flipping the leather sectional to the other side of the room helped with flow. The homeowner has a really great eye herself, and she so fun and easy to work with. I’ll be sharing the dining room of the Gather House as well and the super fun wallpaper she picked out and the molding that was added!
Stunning!!!
Thank you so much! The clients love it, and that makes me so happy!
This is just awesome. I love the fireplace wall, especially the shelf running horizontally above the fireplace and “built ins”. The darker color is definitely a winner. You are really a great designer. Again I wonder when you sleep!!!
Absolutely gorgeous!
It’s truly “Thinking out of the box”!
Great job.
Thank you Jan!
