Painting a China Cabinet Black

I know many of you said “Don’t do it!” when I talked about painting my china cabinet. But I had too, it looked so drab and dated in the plain wood. I decided on a distressed cream because I wanted to lighten my house up, but after I pulled off the doors and painted the black base coat I decided to change my mind.

A wooden china cabinet with glass doors displays ceramic bowls, plates, and decorative sunflowers, against a patterned wallpaper background.

I stopped, Because I really liked it black with the beadboard in the background. It looks so fresh and clean!

A black wooden hutch with shelves holds white ceramic dishes and bowls; books and a pitcher are on the lower part, and a lamp is on the right side.

I remembered a good friend who had also done the same thing to her cabinet and how great it looked. I might change my mind later 🙂 but right now it just seems to fit. Once I put the white batten board up on the wall; I think it is really going to pop in a good way. I love the contrast of the white milk glass on the black painted cabinet sides.

With a cream background and some left over bead board wallpaper, my milk glass really pops and looks so clean and bright. I found this vintage ceramic boot for a touch of the holidays for 25 cents! I thought it was so cute to add even though it is actually a Christmas ornament. With an added stack of books and a cake plate, the transformation of the black painted cabinet is complete.

A white scalloped plate, a white goblet, and three stacked books sit on a shelf next to a small ceramic boot with holly decoration.

I’ll probably continue to tweak it and play with styling, but for now I love how new it looks. It looked so dated before and now it looks brand new but has a fresh look with some vintage charm. Painting the china cabinet black was the right decision!
