Lamp Makeover with Spray Paint: from Drabulous to Fabulous
I found this nice lamp and shade at the thrift store. It had a really nice shape, but the brass was really dated and the shade was boring. I knew that giving it a Lamp Makeover with Spray Paint would give it an entirely new life!
You might wonder... Can you spray paint a metal lamp? You can! It takes just a little bit of prep work. First things first, make sure the lamp is umplugged! Second, cover the socket where the light bulb goes with a plastic bag and pull it down until it covers the entire socket area including the knob. Use painters tape to tape the bag shut and keep any paint from getting inside any of the electric. Third, tape and cover the entire cord including where it goes into the lamp. You want to keep any areas that are used in operation of the lamp free and clear of paint! Check out this post how I used multi-surface paint to paint the metal base of a lamp.
Once you have all of the working parts covered, in a well-ventilated area spray paint your lamp base with a paint that will stick to metal. What ever brand you decided to use it will say it right on the can. Once the paint it dry, you can carefully remove all of your tape, bags and materials you used to protect the working parts and discard!
I made a new lamp shade by covering the old one in a pretty fabric, but a new lampshade can do wonders for an old lamp.
I gave the base a fresh, new look with spray paint and recovered the shade. Ahhh the power of hot glue..
Tomorrow I’ll show you where it’s new home is…

listen, i just love that you used the word drabulous. that’s fabulous! and, the lamp ain’t so bad, either!
SO fabulous! I just love it. I had some lamps that I got from the Goodwill a couple of years ago and eventually gave up and sent them back from whence they came, and I totally regret it now.
Can’t wait to see the ongoing progress on your Mom’s house, too — so exciting!!!!

Great blog!
And a wonderful shade/lamp make-over. I’m new and wonder if you’ve shown how you recovered the lamp shade. I will look around a bit more.
