Dark Green Paint Color In The Bathroom

Dark green paint is the new Millennial gray and is trending all over in decor and design as new neutrals. Dark green paint brings on an earthy, organic feel to spaces and can make a space feel calm and restful. We painted our bathroom from a cool blue color to a dark shade of green paint color with some blue undertones and love how it adds depth and how it feels.

Green Bathrooms Are Trending

To give our bathroom a  makeover would also mean it was time to change out the towel bars, and shower curtain. Our lighting is going to wait a  little while. Like always, there was a little prep beforehand to fill and spackle the old towel bar holes, and some scrubbing and wall cleaning. With all girls in our home, there are a lot of hair products flying around that room, that seem to end up on the walls. I swear, I am over dry shampoo with them.

Picking The Right Color Green

You might wonder is dark green a good bathroom color? Yes it is! It’s a timeless color that can give you quite a few years before having to repaint! Picking a  new green color that works for the space means looking at it in the space as a sample to see it in all kinds of light. It’s important to not only see it in daylight, but also in incandescent lighting, and how it changes through the day.  I did a post on dark wall colors here, and how they were going to be trending, earlier in 2018. I even painted my hutch a dark green color.  Dark colors are finally starting to creep their way into decor, and I’m ready to embrace it a bit.

Picking the Right Reflective Value Of Paint

I was looking for a deep paint color that had a “dusty” overtone with less of a reflective value, and would be a green, with a blue undertone. It used to be it was always semigloss in a bathroom, but formulas have changed so much and become so far advanced, that it’s OK to go with less of a sheen if the paint is specifically made for rooms with moisture.  I picked an eggshell sheen knowing I only wanted a little bit if sheen to the paint.  If you are painting  guest bathrooms without a shower or tub, having a moisture paint is less important, but still not a bad idea.

Make Sure To Swatch Your Dark Green Paint Colors First

I tried a color from Benjamin Moore called Blue Slate at first ,and it was just too blue even though it looked  very green on the paint strip. It even continued to darken until it dried completely on the wall (this is why sample cans are so important!).

My second color was the winner! It’s called Calico Blue #707. It’s a gorgeous dark green with a warm, teal blue undertone without any yellows for an undertone. In fact, during the daylight it looks green, but at night with our incandescent bulbs, dark blue. I love the effect it has! It’s gorgeous and really adds some elegance and even though it has some blue, there are no gray undertones. it’s time to move away from gray paint colors.

Since our bathroom is so small. I used the HomeRight Quick Painter Pad Edger with Flow Control to cut in all of my edges, and even do the smaller parts of my wall.

A hand uses a blue paint edger tool to apply dark blue paint in a straight line along a white wall above white tiled backsplash, showcasing a Bathroom Makeover with Dark Green Blue walls.

It was really nice getting the color on the wall. I opted to leave the board and batten a crisp white color so the dark green wall paint would really pop.

I am love how it looks, it’s like it became a bathroom for grown ups! And, I love how paint is such a great budget makeover tool. It can change everything, in just a few hours, for under $40!

Bathroom makeover with dark green blue walls, a mirror above the sink, black towels, potted plants, and a framed floral artwork create a fresh and stylish space.

The botanical bird image in a frame was a thrift store find., and I found the shower curtain at Target,  but you can find a similar shower curtain here. The dark green towels are Nate Berkus for Target. The  small, gray  and white vase you can find a similar large white vase here. I may add shelves where the art is in the future but for now I like having the vintage artwork there.

A bathroom countertop features a wavy white vase with pine branches, soap and lotion bottles, a small gray vase with pine, and a dark towel—perfect accents for a Bathroom Makeover with Dark Green Blue walls.

It’s such a difference. I just freshened up the white paint on the wainscoting and trim with Benjamin Moore Simply White.

With the green paint trend, I think you are going to see it move farther away from light colors, and more towards contrast and deep saturated with dark against light. Think browns, plums deep maroons and more as moodiest and coziness creeps in.  Even though it’s dark, it’s going to feel very fresh.

  1. The color is amazing! I love that with a white wall treatment, a deep, moody color pairs so well.

  3. Research your botanical print. I too have a thrift store one…1930s original signed and numbered. Humidity will definitely ruin such an antique. I shop thrifts w/ a 10x power loop to tell real from fakes. Jewelry too.

    1. That’s a great idea. I didn’t see that it was signed or numbered. I should give it a second look and see!
