The finally finished "Unfinished" mixed-media chair….

See that poor, little brown chair in the background?
I’ve had this chair I used in my last Etsy photo shoot for ages; not really sure what I was going to do with it. It was kind of a sad, homely thing with the stuffing hanging out. I had been putting it off FOREVER. Every time I passed by that chair I’d think, “Hmmm…I have to do something with that…” and then get that lazy kind of feeling in my bones and keep on walkin’.
It had some dated, torn brown tapestry on it, and the furniture tag on the underside was marked from 1930. It had great bones, it just needed some love.
I knew I wanted to do something a little different with it and experiment; so I decided to finally stop being so lazy and play a bit on an idea I had, and try my hand at some mixed-media type upholstery.

It was actually quite fun and freeing to just kind of go with the flow and try every idea I had with out judging myself for it.
I took regular canvas and transfered a vintage image  and script onto it,
and then did some stenciling and embroidery around the picture and numbers. I even tried a little free-form stitching.
I used vintage upholstery tacks to secure the fabric.

I couldn’t decide whether to paint or re-do the wood, so I decided to “unfinish” it for now by  sanding off the stain to give it a varied and old effect. I might color wash it later.

I  left the old fabric on the arms. I thought it was kind of a cool contrast. I might change them later… I might not… hhhhmmm…..
I covered the seat with a cotton Onasberg, I loved the quilting on it, and used varied tacks and nails for for a more eclectic look.
I am so happy with how it turned out. It goes in every room of my house too. The only bad part about doing it was pulling out the forty-million tacks that held the original fabric on the top ( Holy cow that was  a job, I must admit, I just upholstered right over the bottom fabric .).
It was so much fun to do, I am making pillows similar to this for my spring line and am having a blast working on them.
A cup of coffee, a bit of creativity, and a finished job make for the best days sometimes.
Jen

  3. This is fabulous Jen~ bravo!! Pulling off the old fabric is always the most grueling part of working with these old chairs for me too. I have 3 sitting in my garage that need to be re worked this year, ugh.
