Shop Your House- Living Room Makeover for Free

I’m joining up again with the Thrifty Style Team to bring you a low or no-cost decorating idea! When designing a space, or decorating a room,I am a big believer in practicing what I preach, and shopping my home first! It’s important to shop your home as the first step in a new look, because most of us have enough stuff already tucked around in attics and in basements. We have a ton of stuff in our garage, which we affectionately refer to as “fire hazard number 1”. With this method, it was easy to do a Living Room Makeover for Free. It just meant being creative and doing a little furniture shifting.

Since 2008, we’ve always had the yellow couch my dad grew up on in our living room and another vintage couch. We had both of them recovered  because the original fabric was so brittle.  I wanted a fresh look, and they’ve both taken quite the beating over the last 11 years. A few years ago, we put new furniture in our sub-level space, and I thought, swapping the couches out might be a great way to get a brand new look without spending a single penny.

The hardest part was navigating the sub-level stairs with the couches and the tight corners. We did pretty well though, We had to jockey one couch into one space before we move the other one in. We managed to wrangle them up and down to make the swap with minimal swearing, so that was a plus.

Once we had everything up, it all clicked into place and then I loved it so much, I wondered why we hadn’t done it sooner!

I kept the gray chair upstairs because it went so well with the couch. It really makes the whole room look so much more cohesive!  I also moved my poor palm tree from downstairs. He just wasn’t getting enough light, as you can see he’s a little brown one leaf. I’ll probably trim that off as a new one comes up. You can find a similar pot he is in here.

I added a olive tree to a large basket from another room on the coffee table (that’s been shuffled up and down the stairs quite a bit.).

On the other wall, I placed the gray chair that was already in the living room under one of my abstract art pieces.  You can find a similar abstract here.

I would like to change the curtains out and get something a little more geometric, but that doesn’t fit into the living room makeover for free theme today, so it will be on my future list.

On the mantel, I restyled it with some white vases I had from around the house, and kept my brass candle sticks.

I hung an art piece from Minted from a few years ago that had been hanging in our entry way. I absolutely love how versatile it’s been, I’ve pretty much had it all over our house.

I love how by just swapping the furniture between rooms, I get an entirely new room! I’m now refreshing the downstairs with all of the moved upstairs furniture, so I’ll have that to show you soon!
