How to Make a Decoupaged Pedestal Cake Stand from a Candle Stick and Wood Plate from the Craft Store

Decoupage is such a great way to create custom decor.Wood cake pedestals can be for more than just serving desserts. They can be places to display pretty vignettes and odds and ends. A decorative wood plate and an old candlestick and some decoupage medium can take on new life with paper and embellishments and become a pretty decoupaged pedestal cake stand.

To create this DIY cake stand, you’ll need an old wood candlestick, an unfinished wood plate from the craft store, decoupage medium, and vintage sheet music and clip art pages. I find a lot of my vintage sheet music at antique stores or on Etsy. Beautiful vintage images can be found at The Graphics Fairy.

To create the vintage cake plate, start by decoupaging the sheet music onto the top of the plate. You can see how to decoupage paper onto a wood surface here. After the sheet music is decoupaged on the top, grab some vintage images from The Graphics Fairy and print them out. While you can print them on a home ink jet printer, they do better on a printer with toner; the ink colors are less likely to run. Cut out the images and then decoupage them to the surface on top of the sheet music. I found some really pretty spring images of burds and butterflies that were perfect for my spring inspired cake plate.

After decoupaging all of the elements on, I sealed the top with a clear varnish anf glued the top to the candlestick. I actually painted the base and underside black after decoupaging so it was painted together as one unit, and I was able to paint the edges of the plate to disguise any rough paper edges.

I dressed the pedestal stand up a little bit and made it even more decorative by gluing some vintage earrings on the top with a permanent adhesive. To make it really full of sparkles,I screwed small eye hooks  underneath to hang vintage chandelier crystals into the base.

It really added some great bling and made the pedestal perfect for something like jewelry display, or it’s just a decorative piece by itself.

With the few vintage earrings on top and sealed it with polyacrylic it a decorative piece and not a food safe surface, so I would use another plate on top if you were going to put food on it
