Re-Arranging Cottage Living Room Furniture

It all started with this little table I bought from another dealer at Kane two months ago. It made me want to change everything up and start Re-Arranging Cottage Living Room Furniture. It’s kind of like a bog snowball once you start.

I loved this little table and thought it was so cute, but I just couldn’t fit one more table in, but of course being the hoarder that I am, I didn’t want to get rid of anything… It’s all about the creative cramming…. 🙂
Lots of furniture in a cottage living room
So I started moving everything around at about 3 o’clock on a Sunday afternoon on a whim.
Moving living room furniture around
Then it sat like this for about 45 minutes because I just couldn’t figure it out. You would not believe what I found under those couches!
Living room with two couches and a coffee table
So first I cleaned, it was actually very therapeutic. Then I finally came up with this, which I liked, but I took a step back and looked and realized something.

 TOO MUCH YELLOW. AAAACK!

The light cream I put on my walls about 4 years ago has darkened into a dingy, gacky yellow.  It just felt wrong. In fact, there was so much yellow everywhere.

It’s gots to go! I was inspired to get that fan deck out and change those walls!

I am thinking of adding white beadboard wallpaper on the bottom, some wood trim and a pretty bluey-grey at the top.

I would love to recover my couches but it’s not the the budget. So I think a color change on the walls will make all of the difference.

That dresser needs a coat of paint too. I’ve been putting it off forever and it’s time to break out the brushes!

I think it’s time for a big change. You can see how we painted it white here.

  1. And there it is ~ the snowball effect, Jen! : ) I love this room. The natural light is wonderful. That is such a great table, I’m sure I would have bought it and tried to fit it in, too. I’m sure whatever you decide to do, it will look wonderful.

  2. Jennifer, your room looks so cozy. Love the table. You’re not the only one with stuff under the couch. lol I can identify with the wall situation too. When I moved into my house, I was doing a sort of tuscan thing. I’m hating the yellow now, but just haven’t found the time for a redo.

  3. Love your space… I love your clocks. You should check out my blog and see the clocks I pulled out of a scrap pile at my moms.. Scored!!

  4. Hi,
I love your beautiful style Jennifer, and those vintage settee’s are fabulous!! I can’t wit to see the walls once they are done. I am constantly painting my house, I can never get straight on what I color I want to use. 🙂
Hope you have a lovely day.
    Sincerely,
    Melinda

  5. I love the table that you got at Kane County and it is perfect for your living room. Great idea of using the beadboard wallpaper in the room along with the blue-gray color. It is always fun seeing pictures of your rooms and your projects, love the Jennifer Rizzo Style!

  7. Oh my goodness! I cannot wait to see what you do – your plan sounds fab!! Now I realize what is bugging me about my living room – I keep thinking I should paint it but it’s cream – but now I realize it’s faded to the yellow you were talking about!!
Thanks for the inspiration – love your blog.

  8. Blue-grey sounds good. I just watched an episode of one of those HGTV shows…. I think it was The Property Brothers. Anyway, he bought a sofa to use in the makeover that was exactly like your sofa with the wood trim. He painted the wood portion a bright color and it looked fantastic!

The problem with doing Kane or any other show is how to get home without buying something yourself. That table was a great find.

  9. I painted our downstairs in 2010 a cream {it’s does seem more yellow now?} & I’m ready to paint again–but, painting it’s a huge job! Maybe I will just wait a tad longer 😉

    {cannot wait to see it when you are finished painting….I love the table!}

  17. I just finished our bedroom remodel yesterday…white beadboard wallpaper on the bottom, wood trim at (picture rail height), topped by blue painted walls! I LOVE it! It feels fresh and clean. The walls are interesting, but still a calm background for the furnishings in the room.

  18. I’ve been catching up on all your posts and I had to tell you how much I adore that table 🙂 And don’t even get me started on your photography!

    blessings,
    karianne
