Mulling Spices for Cider and Wine

November 24, 2020 By Jennifer

If you saw my other post about making mulled wine, the mulling spices from that post are an amazing gift for giving. This recipe for mulling spices for cider and wine are enough to make with one bottle of wine. You can give it as a gift itself, or, you can create an entire gift basket with all of the ingredients in it. I think everyone loves getting something handmade or a homemade treat.

I like to use clean recycled jam and jelly jars (I think this one was from pesto) as a green way to make the gift, but you can also use small canning jars, or my favorite Weck jars. I have a printable at the bottom of the post that you can cut and attach with a glue stick or a little clear tape.

Creating a jar of mulling spices

In the clean dry jar, add 1/4 cup of brown sugar, 8-9 whole cloves, 2 star anise, and 1/2 TBSP rainbow peppercorns. You can use regular peppercorns, but the rainbow ones look so pretty. Fresh orange is used in this recipe, but if you want to make your own dried oranges to add, you can see this oven dry method here for drying your own oranges.

To make the mulled wine and see the rest of the ingredients for the mulled wine, see this post.

I added some parchment paper cut in circles to cover the top of the jar, and tied it with twine. With a drop of glue, I added a star anise to the top because I thought it added a nice touch.

This is for a single wine bottle batch, but you can always double it in a larger jar. The wine can be omitted from this recipe and just added to the same amount of cider for mulled cider (approx. 64 ounces). There’s also no harm in a busy holiday season to just buy mulling spices for cider and wine too.

Just click on the image to open it up in a larger window, and right click to save to your computer. This prints out on 8.5 x 11 paper. Because the spices and sugar are so pretty, to create more of a hang tag, you can use card stock in place of paper and punch a hole in the corner and tie it with twine to the jar. Happy gifting!
