Paint a Front Porch Sign

We’ve had lots of front porch painting signs in the store and they are so much fun! My favorite thing is to have people in our workshops that say they aren’t creative or artistic, and then make something really amazing! I wanted to share the workshop with you and how to paint your own porch sign for any season in this step by step tutorial.

Rustic holiday decor with a "Happy Holidays" sign, wreath, wooden chair, and plaid blanket on a wooden bucket placed by a black door and wooden wall. For tips on how to paint a porch sign like this, check out our DIY guide.

Supplies to Paint A Holiday Porch Sign:

-12″ wide pine common board from the home improvement store between 4ft and 6 ft tall

-Outdoor primer

-Outdoor paint

-Large format stencils or 8 inch wide letters printed on paper in choice of font

-Pencil for light color base coat, or chalk for a dark color base coat

-Paint brush and/or paint roller

Paint a Base Coat of Outdoor Paint on the Front and Back Side and Let Dry

It’s important to base coat both the front and back of the board to make it weather tolerant to be outside and keep from year to year. Once that it dry, you are ready to add your lettering.

A person is painting wooden planks dark blue with a brush, prepping them for a front porch sign. Light brown paper protects the surface underneath. A can of dark blue paint and a paint tray are on the table.

Add Your Lettering to Your Porch Sign

Print out your lettering or gather your stencils. Once the sign is dry,  either transfer the lettering onto the painted board using this method, or trace the inside of your stencil lettering using either chalk (if your board is painted a dark color) or a pencil (if your board is painted a light color).

People are gathered in a room, engaged in arts and crafts activities involving paint and wooden boards, creating beautiful front porch signs.

Paint the Inside of Your Lettering on the Board Using Outdoor/ All Weather Paint

Use smaller paint brushes to paint the inside of your lettering. It helps to outline your lettering first  with a liner brush and then fill in the outlined area.

In the store we are putting out our Christmas decor. The theme this year is “Camp Christmas” and it was so much fun to create the displays. it’s so pretty at night with the lights out.

A room decorated for Christmas with a lit tree, wrapped gifts, a reindeer statue, a rustic teepee, and holiday ornaments. The atmosphere is festive and cozy with various holiday decorations, including a charming front porch sign welcoming visitors.

When everyone left late last night, I snapped a few pictures of “Camp Christmas” with the lights off, and the holiday music was still playing. It was a really pretty and serene, and a nice way to end the day. I built a “tent” out of birch logs and some fun buffalo check fabric. That is right next to our ornament bar.

A holiday-themed interior with fairy lights, decorative houses, a deer silhouette, and ornaments displayed on a shelf with a wreath hanging above. A charming front porch sign adds a welcoming touch to the festive ambiance.

If you’re in the area, stop in to take a creative workshop or shop some of our fun and amazing holiday decor.
